January 04, 2005 Gasnor starts up new LNG Satellite Plant at Titania. Titania is one of the World's foremost producers of ilmenite (iron titanium oxide). Ilmenite is used as pigment in plastics, paint, paper etc. Titania utilizes a drying process which requires a significant amount of energy. In the past, this energy came from burning of heavy oil, but is now supplied by natural gas.
The
reasons for conversion from oil to natural gas is two-fold: economy
and environmental. While Titania had previously been granted exemption
from the Norway's very strict environmental requirements, they had,
nevertheless, had difficulty staying within the the requirements of
that exemption. Now, with natural gas, the need for this special exemption
is no longer present.
